Flavour of the Month: Ube
We asked Pia Lim, our Digital Communications Specialist, for her favourite flavour!
What is your favourite flavour and why?
My favourite flavour is ube! It’s gotten much more popular in the last few years, but I grew up eating this in all kinds of sweets in Manila. It’s a very nostalgic flavour for me. Nowadays, you can pick up a carton of ube ice cream at T & T. Still a bit harder to find my absolute favourite though, ube jam on a freshly baked bun.
How long have you worked in LFS and what is your role?
I’ve been the Digital Communications Specialist at LFS for three years now. I take care of the many websites under the LFS umbrella, including this one! I’m also in charge of digital advertising and help out with organic content now and then. On the communications team, we’re keen to spread the LFS brand and let everyone know how great our students, alumni, and community are.
What is your most enjoyable part of your role?
I enjoy helping people tell their story. Before LFS, I worked at a local marketing agency, so I was used to listening to all kinds of different clients. It’s similar when I chat with the faculty members at LFS. I look forward to learning about their work and looking for new ways to present their research to the world.
What is the highlight of working in the LFS?
The people are definitely the highlight! The communications team is quite close knit, and our brainstorming sessions fill me with a lot of exciting creative energy.
How has your experience as a UBC alum influenced your role in LFS?
It’s interesting to see how much has changed since I was a student. During my undergrad, UBC felt like this huge unchangeable institution. It was that familiarity that led me to applying to LFS! But so much can change year to year, especially after the pandemic. Coming back to campus as an alum has made me more flexible, and I have a lot of empathy for students who are going through so much these days.
What is the newest digital communication trend that you think would be of interest to students and alumni?
TikTok is obviously very hot right now! Who among us hasn’t lost track of time on their For You Page? It’s hard to create content as a faculty though. There are a lot of niches on the app, and we often have our work learn students weigh in on whether things are still cool or trendy.
And finally, where on campus, is your go-to place to eat and/or place to relax?
Whenever I forget my lunch, which is too often, I always end up at Perugia. It’s a café on Agronomy Road that serves pasta, soups, and baked goods. Ever since I was a student, I’ve gotten their roast chicken meal. There’s a large airy atrium right next to it where I like to have my lunch and scroll through TikTok.
